Facebook CDN

Update: oops, seems like that college adrenaline rush along with lack of information is the culprit. As Rupak Bhattacharya pointed out in the comment, FB is indeed powered by Akami CDN. My apologies.
Just realised that facebook uses its own Akamai cdn!(Content Delivery Network)

A Content Delivery Network or Content Distribution Network (CDN) is a system of computers networked together across the Internet that cooperate transparently to deliver content most often for the purpose of improving performance, scalability, and cost efficiency, to end users.

With most of the leading players including Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft using other CDN services (mostly akamai)(Though am not sure about the validity of this statement as of date. These major player were on akamai in recent past for sure though). Well, what are the inference of this point. Can’t really say but found it interesting so posted about it. One thing could be that facebook is better equipped compared to the others to manage the traffic on its own. And maybe it could monetise on it in recent future if required! The facebook CDN is located at http://fbcdn.net

    • hi Jay,

well my mistake. FB uses akamai. And indeed so does Yahoo! :!

  2. Mr Anshu Prateek,

Don’t know where you picked up this insane information from!!!

Facebook, completely depends on Akamai, and that’s the truth..

Try this… right click on any facebook page, and go to view source.. you should see stuff like this…

the .ak. in the link points to an Akamai Edge Server, which, contradicts your point very strongly..

Would appreciate it, if you could make the changes to your comments above, based on the truth of the matter.
